The Real

In Lacanian psychoanalysis, the Real is the dimension of existence that lies completely outside language, images, and conscious comprehension. It is not “reality” (which is shaped by our perceptions and society), but rather the raw, pre-symbolic, and often overwhelming truth of the universe that resists being spoken or defined.

• Impossible to fully symbolize, articulate, or integrate into our everyday consciousness.
• The indifferent abyss of existence that is entirely indifferent and devoid of inherent meaning.
• At a clinical level, the Real is the domain of pure bodily need and drive.

Three Registers

1. Real – raw, unfiltered substance behind The Symbolic and The Imaginary
2. Symbolic – language, laws, culture, meaning, communication
3. Imaginary – images, ego, mirrors, fantasies
